The Conservation and Land Management sector comprises businesses and organisations that operate national parks, nature reserves, council reserves, Indigenous protected areas, Commonwealth lands, private land and botanical gardens, to preserve flora and fauna in their natural environment.

The organisations in this sector also provide support to Farmers and Fishers across Australia on best-practice sustainable agriculture. They are focused on expert management of natural assets such as soil, water and native vegetation.

 

Types of tasks/activities completed in the role

The activities you will be involved in will depend on the project you’re working on, but examples include:

  • Restoring native habitats and revegetation
  • Controlling weeds and pests
  • Management and support of threatened species
  • Sharing of cultural and management information

Career options available

  • Park Ranger: you control, supervise and manage national parks, scenic areas, historic sites, nature reserves and other recreational areas.
  • Agricultural technician: responsible for researching, developing and testing food and other agricultural products. They assist with setting up laboratory or field equipment required for testing and conduct experiments to improve the quality, resilience and yield of plants and animals
  • Environmental scientist: study, develop, implement and advise on policies and plans for managing and protecting the environment, flora, fauna and other natural resources
  • Gardeners: you are responsible for planting flowers and other plants, weeding, pruning, grafting, deadheading, mixing and preparation of insecticides and other products for pest control, and tending garden compost
  • Forest worker: you perform routine tasks associated in cultivating and maintaining natural and plantation forests, and logging, felling and sawing trees
 

Potential entry level qualifications

  • Certificate III in Natural Area Restoration
  • Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management
  • Diploma of Conservation and Land Management
