Finding a new passion in Individual Support

Phoutsakhone Ounchith, or better known as Khek to her friends, has always loved to help others around her. Although she started her working life in Laos in the environmental industry, she quickly learned that the labour market is different in Australia than what she is used to.

Khek decided to sign up with the More Jobs More Care program to try a career change. She explained that the program gave her an opportunity to expand her horizons and learn about a different industry and has since landed her first job in the individual support sector.

Khek entered the program and has fallen in love with the industry. “I have been able to work with a great team of people and I also know that I am helping people of various levels of ability to live with dignity and independence.”

As her career progresses, she is also encouraging more people to work in the sector. “Being a support worker is never boring and is rewarding. You need to have compassion and must be prepared to work hard.”

She told us, “Although I didn’t have prior education background in the disability field, MJMC provided me with a free, short, pre-employment training program that gave me nationally recognised certificates.”

The More Jobs More Care program doesn’t require any background knowledge and can be your first step to start a career in a diverse and fulfilling industry. It provides an opportunity to meet new people who will become friends and make meaningful change in the community.
