Growing the nation’s personal care workforce for in-home aged care

ACA’s South Australian office will be working collaboratively with the Department of Education, Skills and Employment and Department of Health to grow the nation’s home care workforce.

The Home Care Workforce Support Program is part of the Federal Government’s $18.8 billion five-year response to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety as more and more senior Australians are choosing to live independently in their homes for longer. The program also aims to grow the nation’s home care workforce by 13,000 over the next two years.

ACA will be offering the three-week course to individuals based in South Australia and the Northern Territory, with the first course beginning late April. It will also work with home care providers to grow and upskill the workforce, assisting senior Australians to remain at home with accessible high quality and safe home care services.

“I am passionate about the Australian home care industry and am excited to be part of changing the landscape for our ageing population,” said Luke Radford, General Manager, Apprenticeship Careers Australia, who has been appointed to deliver the initiative on behalf of the Government.

He also said ACA will be offering a tailored approach to candidates who undertake the program, including the option of a traineeship, flexible study options and wrap-around course services. “We are creating a ready-made workforce to support our senior Australians and for all Australians to feel confident about accessing high quality and safe aged care when they need it,” Mr Radford added.

On March 30, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt announced the Home Care Workforce Support Program. He said the program will raise awareness of career opportunities in the sector; skill and screen new workers; and better equip providers to attract, train, and retain workers including through supporting access to JobTrainer aged care training places.

In addition to this, ACA is also delivering the More Jobs More Care program for people across NSW. The program is an initiative by the NSW Government to increase participation in the care industry and support the needs of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants.
