The Automotive industry is estimated to contribute $37 billion to the Australian economy, and as of May 2018, the industry employed over 356,000 Australians. By starting an automotive apprenticeship you’ll be involved in: 

  • Replacing broken or defective vehicle parts including switches, fuses and lamps.
  • Testing and replacing starter motors, generators and defective alternators.
  • Replacing and repairing electrical wiring. 
  • Testing other defective electrical parts.
  • Taking apart and removing electronic components.
  • Liaising with vehicle owners to explain problems/issues.

Career options available:

  1. Automotive mechanic: People who work on the mechanical parts of vehicles including the engine, suspension systems and other associated parts. Click here to find out more.

  2. Brake Specialists: People who work on the brake systems in vehicles including diagnosing and repairing defective components.

  3. Diesel Fitters: People who diagnose, repair and replace engines and their associated components including diesel fuel systems, air compressors and cooling systems.

  4. Diesel Fuel Specialists: People who diagnose and repair vehicles with diesel fuel systems and their parts including emission control and fuel injection.

  5. Engine Reconditioners: People who restore the condition of engines to enhance their efficiency and performance.

  6. Transmission Mechanics: People who work on light or heavy vehicles, motor cycles, plant and outdoor power equipment carrying out diagnostic procedures, servicing, repairs and overhaul of automatic transmissions.
