Dealing with Job Uncertainty

As humans we really don’t like uncertainty, so when something as important as the future of our work is uncertain it can send us into a bit of a spiral.

When things are uncertain, our brain’s go-to is worry. Worry helps us feel like we are predicting all of the possible outcomes so that nothing can go wrong. In reality, worry makes us no more certain about what will happen, we just end up feeling worse because we’ve spent all this time thinking about all the worst-case scenarios.

So, what is the solution?

You’re probably not going to like this, but the only thing that we can do about uncertainty is become more comfortable with it. We can do this by:

1. Training our mind to look for what’s within our control

We can’t control the craziness of the world, all we can control is ourselves. Look for ways that you can positively influence the situation that you’re in, there is always something that you can do that will improve your situation even if it's only in a small way. You might research stress management, look into financial support or reach out to family and friends for support.

2. Remind yourself that this is not forever

This is a temporary setback and it will not go on forever. We don’t know when this will end but we do know that it will. Remind yourself of this when everything feels overwhelming.

3. Take care of yourself and reduce your stress levels

Exercise, getting enough sleep and eating a healthy balanced diet do wonders for giving you the mental energy to deal with these challenging times.
